Description
This would be considered my 24th MechOwlie, however it is quite separate from the rest of them. It definitely has a different look!
I was approached by a company that was looking for a "whimsical steampunk" theme for Toyota's "Free Yr Radio", and they were interested in a few of my sculptures. After a little bit of talk, it was finalized that I would make them two sculptures - one based off my MechOwlie designs, and one based off of my Squid and Jellyfish designs.
Freelance Project #1 - The MechOwlie is a little bit bigger than the other ones I have made, namely because I wanted to get as much detail on there as I could. They had requested a few particular details such as a mustache, tophat, gear innards, armoured tummy, etc.
At first, I wasn't sure about the mustache - but I think it suits him. Personally, I am not a "lets-put-mustaches-on-stuff" kind of girl, but it was a small compromise I was willing to make. I nicknamed him Sir Topham Hatt. Yes - I watched too much Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid.
So what's in store for Sir Topham Hatt? Well, he is going to be featured on an eight foot backdrop for a stage. Bands will feel the overbearing presence of a giant MechOwlie behind them! It will also be part of the layout on the Free Yr Radio website and used in other media.
I sent the originals to the company, and I got an e-mail back saying that there was serious talk of an arm wrestle between the company and their client, Toyota, to see who gets to keep them. Bahahaha! I definitely got a kick out of that.
Although this creature looks to be made from metal, he is not - he is completely handsculpted from polymer clay with the addition of a few metal findings. This piece has been glazed with a satin finish for a slight sheen and durability.
