This is Freya - a mechanical birdie, and a mate to Od - a male mechanical birdie. She is red, amber and gold in colour with two yellow LED eyes and golden feathers near her eyes. She has watch parts on her back and lovely golden ballchain detailing throughout.
In Germanic lore, Od was the lost husband of Freya. When Freya could not find him, she shed tears of gold that turned trees into amber.
I got a message one day from a lovely English woman who had been regarding my work since the beginning. She had saved up her money to buy not one, but two mechanical birdies. She asked for one male and one female so that they may be mates. I thought that was mighty sweet.
Although this creature looks to be made from metal, he is not - he is completely handsculpted from polymer clay with the addition of a few metal findings and coiled wire legs. This piece has been glazed with a satin finish for a slight sheen and durability.
Custom Mechanical Birdies are available for purchase in my Etsy Shop.
All of it is made out of clay - except for the parts where I added watch parts, some ballchain, and little wings to the eyes (which are made from metal). Oh, and the coiled wire legs.
What did you make the amber colored parts out of?
