As Summer starts to fade away and Autumn peaks around the corner, I get busy creating sugar skulls for the upcoming Dia De Los Muertos.

Ever since I first heard of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) quite a few years ago, I have been taken over by the beauty of these lovely little sugar skulls, and I make them every single year!

What exactly is Dia De Los Muertos? Well, it's a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mexico (and by Mexicans all over the world) on November 1st and 2nd - just after Hallowe'en. Contrary to the name, the celebrations held are actually quite beautiful and happy.

People often adorn their loved ones graves with their favourite possessions, foods, and flowers. Altars are also created in their honour, full of photos, candles, and sugar skulls.

A sugar skull is actually white sugar that has been pressed into a skull mold and dried until it is hardened. It is then decorated with vibrant royal icing and lovely findings such as feathers, rhinestones, sequins, glitter, and coloured foils.

I have hand sculpted this sugar skull from a durable polymer clay, and it has a delightful pearl white hue to it. After the clay has been cured and cooled, I have carefully and tediously hand painted the design onto the clay with black acrylics as well as a touch of bright red to really make it pop. The eyes are lovely heart shapes and the entire piece has been glazed in a satin finish for durability and a slight sheen.

It truly is a beautiful piece, and completely one of a kind. It comes with a small ♥MK on the back to show that it has been hand painted by me, Monster Kookies.

Completely hand-sculpted from polymer clay and hand painted in acrylics.
