New Dawn Fades - Front

Yes, I am sure that it shows that I was getting sick of taking pictures of my Industrial Hearts on white backgrounds. And I thought that the 30th heart I made was a good opportunity to change the scenery!

This is the 30th piece in my Industrial Heart collection, entitled "New Dawn Fades". Hooray! A milestone!

For Joy Division fans, that title should ring a bell. It's one of my favourite songs by them, and helped inspire me as I created this piece. The title also describes the hearts theme, and the tragic event of Hurricane Katrina that this piece is based on. This heart was almost all spontaneous, as I had no clear idea in my head before I created it.

You may notice that it has a different look compared to my other Industrial inspired hearts, but I wanted to take a bit of a different path this time. This heart is more patched and textured than all of my other pieces, which makes it my favourite so far!

This heart was created for a lady from New Orleans. She wanted something that reflected her home - complete with the Fleur De Lis on the back, and an X on the front of the brass locket - these X's were painted on houses after Huricane Katrina, meaning that the house was unsafe to enter.

Within the X's spaces, numbers were also painted. the numbers were important because it listed the date that a rescue group entered the home, what rescue group they were, the date, and the number of bodies found both dead and alive.

This heart is highly intricate and textured to comemorate the fine detailed iron work in the city of New Orleans, as well as it's decorative fine architecture.

The base is a copper metallic, and the details have been picked out with Pewter, Brass, and metallic Olive for the top of the heart.

The front of the heart has several panels, all with subtle texturing using old Victorian textures and buttons that I have, as well as clock and watch gears. On the back is a lot more patching with the Fleur De Lis as the centerpiece.

On the Back-Right side of the heart is a small row of stitching finished off by a bow. On the Left side is antique chain looped back into the heart, and another strand that hangs below. This strand is attached to a brass locket with gears inside and a black X on the front. It can be opened or closed.

These pictures do NOT do this piece justice. There is so much detail jammed into this piece, and I couldn't capture it all. The trimming around the holes where the chain comes from is an example of some of the detail that isn't seen.
